At RTITB, we’re often asked: “What training is actually required when someone starts operating a different type of lift truck?”
The answer? It depends on one critical factor. Is there a significant difference between their previous experience and the new equipment or operating environment?
To help clarify this, we’ve broken it down in a simple flowchart:
This approach is firmly rooted in guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L117. This sets the legal framework for lift truck operator training.
Understanding Lift Truck Training Type
-
Lift Truck Conversion Training
This is for operators with existing, relevant skills, but who now need to operate a different machine. For example, switching from a counterbalance lift truck to a reach truck. Off-job conversion training ensures they understand new controls, handling characteristics, and limitations before they operate the truck in a live environment.
-
Job-Specific Lift Truck Training
This focuses on the context in which the equipment is used. Such as the layout of the site, the loads handled, racking systems, and procedures. It’s essential whether or not a significant difference is present. This is delivered off the job to ensure controlled learning.
-
Lift Truck Familiarisation Training
This final stage is delivered on the job, under close supervision. It allows the operator to apply their learning in the actual working environment. Safely, and in real time.

Why the right lift truck training matters
For third-party logistics (3PL) and food and drink logistics companies, as well as training providers, getting this wrong can mean more than just compliance issues. It can result in serious accidents, lost productivity, fines, and reputational damage.
The right lift truck training mix ensures:
- Compliance with HSE ACoP L117
- Improved operator confidence
- Reduced incidents and near misses
- A culture of continuous safety improvement
