HOW DOES AN URBAN DRIVER EPA WORK?

Every apprenticeship has an End-Point Assessment (EPA) plan which sets out the specific assessment Gateway requirements for that standard, which must be met before an apprentice can take an EPA.

Our End-Point Assessment for the Urban Driver (ST1025) Level 2 apprenticeship has three components:

    1. Multiple-choice test with 30 questions that takes 45 minutes. Usually delivered via our online EPA system
    2. Practical driving assessment which takes place in the workplace (or in a training centre which simulates the workplace) and involves the apprentice carrying out normal duties, including route planning, pre-use checks, and driving on the public highway. The Urban Driver apprentice has 2 hours that will show the RTITB Assessor that they have the skills set out in the apprenticeship standard.
    3. Interview which lasts 45 minutes and explores knowledge, skills, and behaviours across the standard, including vehicle and load management, health and safety, environment and sustainability, and legislation. The RTITB Assessor will ask questions about understanding of the job role, duties and responsibilities, specific to the KSB’s within the assessment plan, to clarify the apprentice’s understanding.

Typically job roles may include Delivery Driver, Urban Driver, Customer Delivery Driver and more. After the typical 12 month apprenticeship period, the training provider will work with the employer to decide when the apprentice is ready for end point assessment with a suitable EPA Organisation (such as RTITB in this case).

WHAT IS THE URBAN DRIVER APPRENTICESHIP STANDARD (LEVEL 2)?

Urban drivers operate fixed axle (rigid) vehicles over 3500kg, often serving multiple customers each day, in cities and congested areas. This is different to large goods vehicle (LGV) drivers who typically operate a point-to-point service, driving more miles in larger and heavier articulated lorries.

Either a category C or C1 licence is required and must be passed before completing the apprenticeship. Urban drivers could be employed “in-house” or for a transport and logistics company in retail, construction, recycling, manufacturing and many other industries.

The Urban Driver Apprenticeship Standard develops the skills needed to transport goods by road to an agreed destination. Apprentices learn many different skills including how to ensure a vehicle is loaded correctly, how to adapt their driving style, plan delivery routes, comply with regulations, procedures and more.

RTITB is a registered End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) and is recognised by Government regulator Ofqual to deliver EPAs for Urban Driver C / C1 (ST1025) Level 2.
